Project A.L.I.C.E.

Platform: BMW Mini Cooper/Web

Release: 2015

Role: Designer + Writer

Project A.L.I.C.E. is a cutting edge in-car-entertainment experience which imagines how stories will be delivered in a future with self-driving cars. Working at USC’s Mobile and Environmental Media Lab I was part of the team approached by BMW to imagine the future of the auto industry as it shifts towards driverless cars. Project A.L.I.C.E. offers a glimpse into that future, in which vehicles exist as storytelling platforms.

Contributions

  • Planned story missions, wrote dialogue and copy for BMW in-car ARG entertainment project.

  • Designed car persona and interactive language utilizing build-in sensors allowing the driver to “speak” with their car.

  • Created visual assets and SFXs used for expressing car character on in-car display and through speakers.

  • Created and maintained production tracker of all game and story assets through timed release of project.

FORMAT

Project A.L.I.C.E. was presented through a series of in-car episodes delivered primarily through a Mini Cooper’s unique iDrive system. The iDrive System is display used in Mini Coopers which is GPS-enabled and allowed us to upload of text, images and audio files. We created a series of episodes for a single driver to be played through a 4-month long experience.

STORY

After receiving a new BMW Mini Cooper, the driver discovers their car has started to develop a personality. The driver is contacted by a fictional BMW Lab team and learns how to communicate with their car’s emerging personality. The driver discovers the car’s personality is named Alice and needs help downloading it’s missing memories. After completing a series of quests, Alice evolves and says goodbye to the driver - curious to learn about the world outside of the BMW Mini Cooper.
